The right person, in the right role, at the right time

Onboarding and Probation

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is dedicated to getting the right person in the right role, to make Cumbria a safer place for all.

Following successful appointment, the probation period is an essential time to establish the Service’s Core Code of Ethics, the values and behaviours we promote, and to input into our vision for our culture.

Onboarding

If you have a new member of staff due to start soon, it's key to make sure the Resourcing and Talent team have everything needed to onboard the candidate onto our HR system.

We advise managers to utilise RT7 - Managers Checklist to make sure everything is ready for a successful start date.

Probation Policy

All employees are subject to a six month probation period and this is an essential time to support those new to role to understand their responsibilities, the Service culture and values, and the expectations they need to meet to be signed off at the six month mark.

It is important to note that the six month probation is not linked to Operational Competency, which will be undertaken over a longer period.

Induction

When someone joins CFRS, we want them to get a good understanding of our service, our culture and values, and other important information (when will they get paid, how do they book holiday, etc.)

The Resourcing and Talent team have a number of Induction Booklets to support with successful inductions - please see below. These Induction Booklets are a work in progress and we really value staff and manager feedback - if you have recently inducted a new team member and have any feedback, please email the team directly at Recruitment@cumbriafire.gov.uk
